INVS 1520:
Civic Engagement: Using Democracy as a Tool for Social Change
"The most meaningful aspect of this class has been learning how
accessible government is to us. I learned this on our fieldtrip
and I think it is what will stay with me forever."
Course Content:
"The two aspects [of this learning experience] that truly set
this class apart from the rest have been the class discussions and the
personal attention [from] the instructors. Unlike other lecture-type
classes, [our] discussions and debates offer multiple points of view
and broaden the topics. In this class it is obvious that the instructors
will go out of their way to get things done."
"Public officials and community members we have dialogued with,
at the capitol or in class, [are] people who actually effect change."
"We generate a lot of great discussions and debates."
"The discussions…allow me to get to know my classmates
better and understand their perspectives."
"I love how much emphasis is put on enjoying our time together
and talking about things that matter to us personally."
"Prior to this class I had never paid any attention to the Colorado
legislature, only to the national arena. I think this has helped
me expand my knowledge and interest in politics."
"The most meaningful aspect of this course has been understanding
how bills go through the General Assembly and what we, as individuals,
can do to influence representatives."
"I think the tools you are offering in this class are very valuable….You
are giving us a gift!"
General Accolades:
"I look forward to coming to this class, not only for the instructors
but for the other students as well."
"I think this is a fabulous class. Thanks for creating it."
Praise for Instructors:
"It has been nice to have a state legislator with a plethora of
knowledge in our midst. It's such a unique opportunity that
not many students at CU have."
"I really appreciate the inclusion of visual and hands-on learning
you use. I learn best that way but rarely have teachers incorporate
[those methods.]"
"The instructors have been very inclusive--this is vital in a
community."
