Invst Community Studies

Consistent with our vision for a just and sustainable world, INVST Community Studies programs develop engaged citizens and leaders who work for the benefit of humanity and the environment.

In order to fulfill our mission, we offer:

  • A comprehensive two-year Community Leadership Program that develops community leaders who engage in compassionate action as a lifetime commitment;
  • Community Studies Electives that foster civic responsibility and leadership potential;
  • A Youth Council for Public Policy that empowers students to use the democratic process as a tool for positive social change; and
  • Our newest program involves CU student mentors in Public Achievement with local high school students in Lafayette, CO in order to meet community challenges and solve societal problems. Young people learn from each other about citizenship and democracy as they design and implement community service projects together.

UPCOMING EVENTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
  • RESCHEDULED! INVST Community Studies invites K-12 teachers, school administrators, and interested community members to participate in "Students as Architects: Building Bridges between Classroom and Community," an interactive and free professional development workshop on Thursday, December 10, 2009, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the University Memorial Center, Room 247. This course is intended to develop teachers' professional competencies with the pedagogies of participatory education and service learning. Participants will explore participatory service learning both through the lens of critical education theory and examine its relevance for creating democratic classrooms. The workshop will be supported by Sabrina Sideris, Program Director of INVST Community Studies and Elaina Verveer, INVST Instructor, and facilitated by creative, experienced and well-organized student alumni from our Community Leadership Program. "Students as Architects" is made possible by generous support from the CU Outreach Committee. Download Registration Here.
