Measuring the Information

In the example on the previous slide, the “our next meeting…” message contains 5 bits of information because the 32 equally likely alternatives can be reduced to 1 by asking 5 yes-no questions: Question 1: 32 ? 2 = 16

Question 2: 16 ? 2 = 8
Question 3: 8 ? 2 = 4
Question 4: 4 ? 2 = 2
Question 5: 2 ? 2 = 1
