Cognitive Dissonance

Psychological discomfort caused by inconsistency among a person’s beliefs, attitudes and/or actions.
Example: Smoking.
Varies in intensity based on importance of issue and degree of inconsistency.
Induces a “drive state” – need to avoid or reduce dissonance by changing beliefs, attitudes or behaviors so they are perceived as consistent.
