rhetorical situations, expectations

On the last day of class each student will be invited to participate in an Awards Ceremony, and each will either present or receive an award for some aspect of Public Speaking during the semester. This presentation or reception speech constitutes a speech of special occasion, as discussed by Osborn/Osborn Chapter 15, and is intended to be delivered impromptu, as discussed in Chapter 11.

No outline in required for the impromptu speech.

As preparation, give careful thought to the rhetorical expectations of such a ceremony. Review the components of a presentation or reception speech and be mindful of fulfilling these expectations and components.

Before the ceremony, a few minutes will be set aside for students to mingle and to check on how to pronounce a classmate's last name, refresh one's memory about a speech topic, and so on.

Each student is expected to present or receive the award accurately, and is expected to be respectful and brief, staying within the allotted 30 seconds to 1:30.
