In
our unit on Socio-economic class we learned about several systemic mechanisms
whereby class power and privilege are reproduced. Many
of our readings also illustrated how institutional rules, laws, norms and/or
policies intersect with race and gender in a way that perpetuates wealth
for some, and poverty for others. For
your second paper, choose one of the mechanisms we examined (federal lending
laws, redlining policies, welfare regulations, educational policy and/or
practice, workplace and occupational segregation, etc…) or another that
appears to operate in similar fashion that you would like to learn more
about.Write a 5-7 page analysis drawing
on at least ten (10) outside sources that addresses the following questions:
What
is the institutional policy or practice you are examining and how does
it operate to support or maintain class privilege or oppression?
What
is the history of this policy? When was it implemented? What
were precursors to it?How and why
did it come about? How is this policy enforced and sustained today?
What
are the social impacts of this policy or practice? Who gains from it and
who struggles because of it? How does this policy intersect to reproduce
wealth and/or poverty along lines of race and gender?
What
have you learned from conducting this research? How does it inform your
understanding of your own classed experience? What problems, if any, do
you see with the current system? (**Note that you do not need to offer
a solution, but rather must work to clearly understand, and then describe
what you see to be the core problem).
