Graduate Advising

The Associate Chair for Graduate Studies, Jackie Elliott, offers individualized advising for classics graduate students and prospective graduate students. Graduate students meet with the Associate Chair for Graduate Students each semester to discuss their progress towards meeting the requirements for their degree. The advisor helps students with finding mentors, course selection and any questions they may have about applications or plans for the future, as well as chairing the Graduate Committee which determines funding.

All incoming graduate students in Classics are required to take a one-semester non-credit proseminar in the fall semester of their first year. This proseminar meets once a week and is organized by the Graduate Administrative Assistant and the Associate Chair for Graduate Studies. Each faculty member who is present that semester holds one meeting; topics to be covered will include various aspects of the field and of the profession, as well as particular research skills.
