Classics Professor Emeritus John Newbold Hough passed away in July 2000 at the age of 93. Dr. Hough was born in New York City. He graduated from Exeter Academy in 1923, from Dartmouth College in 1927, and from Princeton University, where he earned his Ph.D. in Classics, in 1933. He taught at Ohio State University from 1933 to 1945, when he moved to Boulder. He began teaching at the University of Colorado in 1946.

Dr. Hough was an officer of The Classical Association of the Middle West and South. He served as Secretary-Treasurer of CAMWS from 1951-1959 and as its president 1960-1961. He chaired the Regional Woodrow Wilson Selection Committee and guided study groups on tours of Greece. Dr. Hough retired from CU Boulder in 1972.
