The CLASP program sponsors talks and events on the subject of culture, language, and social practice from a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives.

During the weekend of October 5 - October 7, 2007, the University of Colorado hosted the first interdisciplinary Conference on Culture, Language, and Social Practice. The CLASP Conference was an incredible success, and will be continued as a bi-annual conference held every two years in the Fall. For more information, please visit the conference site.

On Wednesday, November 9th 2005, the Department of Germanic and Slavic together with the CLASP program sponsored a lecture by Sveta Adonieva, a Russian fulbright scholar and linguistic anthropologist, entitled “Cursing, Competing, and Lamenting: Ritual Speaking Conventions, Gender and the Social Order in the Post-Soviet Russian North.”

On Oct. 27 and Oct. 28, 2005, the School of Education sponsored the Charles Colloquium Series, featuring Penny Eckert (Stanford) and Jay Lemke (Michigan). The schedule of events and information about the speakers, their talks, and other informal events can be found here. Eckert and Lemke are linguistically-oriented scholars whose work is at the intersection of several fields (linguistics, education, anthropology, media studies, youth studies, and science).

The CLASP inaugural event, which took place in April of 2004, consisted of a number of provocative graduate student presentations on the subject of "Enemies, Elites, and Ideologies in Post-9/11 Discourse." Panel participants included Brian Klocke from the Department of Sociology, Adam Hodges from the Department of Linguistics, and Lori Peek from the Department of Sociology.
