IGOR Pro is a widely used software for calculations, graphing, fitting, etc. IGOR Pro has been used in past classes CHEM5161 and CHEM5181, including homeworks, and is also used in several research groups (Jimenez, Tolbert, Volkamer) within the Department of Chemistry. Independently whom you decide to be working with, I suspect you will likely keep using IGOR Pro for your research.
IGOR is comparable to Matlab, IDL or similar packages, but is better in several ways for scientific data analysis. More info on IGOR is at: http://www.wavemetrics.com/ .
The Department of Chemistry has purchased an academic license for use by students on coursework. Please install IGOR Pro on your computer. There are both PC and Mac versions available.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You should install IGOR in your computers by downloading it from:
https://www.wavemetrics.com/order/order_downloads.htm
and then entering the following Serial Number and Activation Key:
Serial Number: to be obtained from instructor
Activation key: to be obtained from instructor
Product: IGOR Pro 6
License Type: Coursework License/EN
Once you have installed, you should open the online manual (PDF) and go through the "Getting Started in IGOR" section. A printed copy of this booklet can also be borrowed from Prof. Volkamer.
Donna Sueper (our local Igor guru) will give an introduction to Igor on *** date to be determined ***. For those of you who have personal laptops, please bring them to class so that you can follow the tutorial in your computers. If you do *Please make sure to install IGOR and make sure it runs BEFORE class.*
Donna will also have IGOR office hours every Tue 1-2 PM during Sep and Oct. Her office is CIRES 141, in the corridor where Maggie's lab is, to the right of the stairs as you enter the Atrium.
The IGOR license is for coursework only, so after the end of the semester,
those of you joining one of the IGOR-equipped groups should install their licenses.
For the rest of you, you can try to convince your advisors to get a license
(pretty cheap at $350 or so) or get a personal license ($85 for student personal
purchases). The license is valid for any course in the CHEM Dept., so if you
know of other faculty that would be interested in using IGOR in their courses,
pls let your instructor know.
