Graduate Study - Interdisciplinary Opportunities
Numerous opportunities exist in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry for research at the interface of two areas. Interdisciplinary programs and research opportunities exist in the areas of:
Molecular Biophysics at the University of Colorado is a collaborative effort involving students, postdocs and faculty from five departments on the Boulder campus. Participants share a common interest in biological systems, and seek to understand these systems in terms of physical and chemical principles.
Program in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences
The Program in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (PAOS) is an interdisciplinary program that provides an educational and research environment to examine the dynamical, physical, and chemical processes that occur in the atmosphere and the ocean. A major theme is the establishment of a physical basis for understanding, observing, and modeling climate and global change. This is an interdisciplinary certificate program requiring approval by the Certificate Committee of the proposed course selection and then completion with a grade of B or better a total of four courses from the approved list of courses.
Biotechnology Training Program
An interdisciplinary program that leads to the Ph.D. degree and is designed to provide an integrated, interdisciplinary training that encompasses modern molecular biology, biochemistry, and biochemical engineering. Students must be accepted to one of three departments (Chemistry & Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, MCD Biology).
An interdisciplinary degree program that offers opportunities for research in the areas of nanotechnology, atmospheric and environmental chemistry, Bose-Einstein condensation, laser spectroscopy, surface and materials research, state-resolved dynamics, and ultra-fast processes. Students must be accepted to either the Physics Department or the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department.
The Neuroscience Community at the University of Colorado at Boulder is made up of over 80 faculty and research associates rostered in 13 departments and institutes. Neuroscience activities on the campus are coordinated by the Center for Neuroscience. The University of Colorado at Boulder offers a Ph.D. in Neuroscience, as well as graduate and undergraduate Certificates in Neuroscience that can be combined with a variety of majors..
The Optical Science & Engineering Program
An interdisciplinary program requirement that a student be accepted to either the Physics Department, the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department or the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering.
The Signal Transduction and Cell Cycle Regulation Predoctoral Training Program
An interdisciplinary program offering specialized training in biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology, and biomolecular mass spectrometry as applied to cell regulation. Students must be accepted to Chemistry & Biochemistry Department or Molecular, Cellular, & Developmental Biology Department.
Research that is focused on studying the growth, properties and applications of inorganic, organic and molecular thin films. A number of groups in both the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department and the Department of Chemical Engineering are involved.
