The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers minors in either chemistry or biochemistry.

Below are the required courses to obtain a minor in either chemistry or biochemistry.

  • General Chemistry
    • General Chemistry Sequence:
      • CHEM 1113/1114 (5) and CHEM1133/1134 (5), or CHEM 1400/1401 (5)
  • Organic Chemistry

Note: Physical Chemistry 1 has a prerequisite of calculus 3 and a prerequisite or co-requisite of PHYS 1120(4).
  • Physical Chemistry
    • CHEM 4511(3)

Note: CHEM 4011 and CHEM 4171 have very specific prerequisites.  Students are advised to check the course prerequisites before trying to enroll.
  • One of the Following:
    • CHEM 4531(3) - Physical Chemistry 2
    • CHEM 4011(3) - Inorganic Chemistry
    • CHEM 4171(3) - Instrumental Analysis

  • General Chemistry
    • General Chemistry Sequence:
      • CHEM 1113/1114  (5) and CHEM 1133/1134 (5), or CHEM 1400/1401 (5)

 Note:CHEM 4400 has a prerequisite of calculus 2 and a prerequisite or co-requisite of PHYS 1120.  CHEM 4511 has a prerequisite of calculus 3 and a prerequisite or co-requisite of PHYS 1120(4).
  • Physical Chemistry
    • CHEM 4400 or CHEM 4511(3)
  • Biochemistry
    • One of the following:
      • CHEM 4611(3)
      • CHEM 4700(4) and either CHEM 4720 or CHEM 4740

Note: Students who take MCDB 3135 cannot take CHEM 4740 to fulfill their biochemistry minor requirements.

The College of Arts and Sciences will allow a maximum of 9 hours of transfer credit, including 6 upper-division credit hours, to count towards a minor.

These minor programs each require a minimum of six semesters of CHEM courses. Students may transfer in through organic chemistry only. All required courses must be complete with grade of C- or better, and the overall GPA in all CHEM courses taken must be 2.0 or higher.

Students who have taken CHEN 1211 and CHEM 1221 may substitute them for CHEM 1113/1114  in the minor requirements. Engineering students who have taken CHEM 4521 may use this course to satisfy the physical chemistry 1 requirement for both minors. CHEN 4521 can not be used to satisfy the physical chemistry requirement for either minor.
