Undergraduate Program

Overview

The undergraduate program in chemical and biological engineering provides a challenging curriculum that allows students to pursue a variety of career options.  Not only do our graduates work in a variety of high-tech industries, they are well prepared to pursue careers in medicine or other fields in which a strong science and technology background can be a plus, such as business or law.

Our program has a strong reputation for active engagement with the students.  Our students have significant contact with other ChBE students and faculty every semester of the curriculum.  More than 2/3 of our undergraduates work with faculty members to perform cutting-edge research, either as part of independent study, senior thesis, discovery learning apprenticeships, or for hourly pay. ChBE faculty use a variety of innovative teaching tools that emphasize active learning.  Our department’s Cooperative Education Program allows interested students to alternate semesters at school and work, allowing students to better understand applications of classroom topics while earning money for school.

Our faculty have been recognized for excellence in teaching with numerous teaching awards:

  • University of Colorado President’s Teaching Scholar
  • University of Colorado Distinguished Professor
  • CMA Catalyst Teaching Award
  • 3 ASEE Outstanding Teaching Awards
  • Research Corporation Cottrell Teacher/Scholar Award
  • ASEE AT&T Award for Education
  • 2 Boulder Faculty Assembly Teaching Awards
  • 5 Hutchinson College of Engineering and Applied Science Teaching Awards
  • 2 Peebles College of Engineering and Applied Science Teaching Innovation Awards
