A number of novel materials and techniques are encompassed in the department’s research in the areas of catalysis, reaction engineering, and surfaces science. One major focus of research is on developing a rational approach to improving catalysts for important reactions; this approach involves an integration of theory, model experiments, and reactor studies performed under industrially-relevant conditions. Another critical theme is the development of catalysts for environmental applications, both in the areas of renewable energy and pollution abatement.
