Frequently Asked Questions

1.  How do I learn more about current research in the department?

  • Take some time to explore our website
  • Email department Graduate Admissions staff chbegrad@colorado.edu
  • Contact a faculty member via email
  • Visit the department

2.  I am a prospective student and I want to join the research group of one of the faculty members in the department. Is he or she currently recruiting?

Admission decisions are made by a department Graduate Admissions Committee. Admission is based on overall student qualifications and is independent of research subject area.  Departmental faculty members do not conduct individual recruiting practices for prospective graduate students.

All first year students are provided with the opportunity to learn more about each of the faculty research projects during their first year as a PhD student. Students select their preferences and are then matched with a research team.

You are welcome to contact faculty directly in order to learn more about current research. Unfortunately, due the shear volume of these requests, it is difficult for faculty to respond to these inquiries.  We apologize if your request can not be answered in a timely manner. Further information about the ChBE department at the University of Colorado at Boulder can always be requested by emailing chbegrad@colorado.edu.

3.  I am concerned that my application will be denied.  Can a faculty member evaluate my chances for admission before I apply?

No department faculty or staff at the University of Colorado at Boulder is permitted to perform a preliminary evaluation of prospective student credentials. Prospective student information will only be reviewed through formal submittal to the Graduate Admissions Committee.

As a rough guide to help you determine your eligibility for our program, students admitted to our program for the fall 2006 semester had GPA scores ranging from 3.35 to 4.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and GRE scores from (verbal) 500-690, (quantitative) 680-800, (analytical) 620-800 and (analytical writing) 4.5-6.0.

Our department requires a minimum TOEFL score of 250 on the computer-based test for all international applicants.

4.  I would like to have a paper application and department information sent to my home.  Whom should I contact?

Our department no longer mails general information about the PhD program. Instead, all departmental details can be found by visiting our website http://www.colorado.edu/che/

If a prospective student cannot obtain prolonged access to the online application for admission, individual inquiries for a paper application are accepted for international applicants only. Please email chbegrad@colorado.edu.

Prospective student visits are held annually in March or April for admitted students.
