As the CEO of Forge Nano, Paul Lichty (MechEngr BS‘06, ChemEngr PhD‘11) now spearheads the advancement of the company’s cutting-edge nano coating technology.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the revamped and retooled Chemical Engineering Design Project course — a class (re)designed to provide seniors with practical problem-solving experience and foster stronger ties to industry.

Haichao Wu of the Dan Schwartz Group is the winner of the College of Engineering and Applied Science’s 2021 Outstanding Dissertation Award for “Nanoparticle Tracking to Probe Transport in Porous Media.” This award is a recognition of the quality and excellence of Wu’s research as well as his presentation of the dissertation.

Tunkie Saunders leads metallurgy development at Redwood Materials, a Nevada-based company, founded by JB Straubel, that is building a lithium-ion battery recycling process, devised by Tunkie, to extract lithium selectively from old batteries, in a pure form.

Chern-Hooi Lim (PhDChemEngr’15) is the founder and CEO of New Iridium, a spinoff company created by research conducted in part in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. He was recently selected for C&EN’s Talented 12, a program that honors young chemists and chemical engineers who are bringing innovation and entrepreneurship to bear on pressing global issues.

Sam Goodman (ChemEngr’16) was selected as one of two Outstanding Mentor Award winners for the Spring 2021 semester for his work with sophomore Abigail Hutabarat.

“La Randonnée” is French for a rambling walk or hike. For department alumnus Kevin Green (ChemEngr’96), the metaphor of an extended journey is apt for his own winding career. First as a student studying chemical and environmental engineering at CU Boulder, to a stint at Intel, then as an expatriate living in Ireland, and finally as a winemaker at Apollini Vineyards in Oregon and for his own label, appropriately named La Randonnée Wines.

Thad Sauvain (ChemEngr’91) was selected as one of two Outstanding Mentor Award winners for the Spring 2021 semester for his work with junior Kyle Kinney. Kinney provided the nomination, stating that his mentor “provided invaluable advice for applying to internships and professional development.”

Department alumnus Professor H. Scott Fogler (PhDChemEngr'65) was recently named a Michigan Distinguished Professor of the Year by the Michigan Association of State Universities, a prestigious honor among faculty members working in public university undergraduate education.

Alumna Kim Ogden has been named president-elect of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Ogden, a professor of chemical and environmental engineering and director of the Institute for energy solutions at the University of Arizona, will become president of AIChE in 2019.
