When not consulting for ExxonMobil and Shell, alumnus Alexander von Allmen (ChemEngr'12) devotes time to making life a little fresher. von Allmen recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund his new company iFresh LLC, which uses smartphones to control environmentally friendly air fresheners that connect to HVAC systems.

Though von Allmen has spent the years since leaving CU consulting for energy companies on process controls and automation with PLC's and HMI's, he has always been fascinated with scents and technology. This interest prompted him to develop an environmentally-friendly device that could control the smell of his house without running continuously.

Using custom Android and Apple iOS applications, von Allmen has created iFresh, an environmentally friendly smartphone-controlled air freshener that connects to HVAC systems. With iFresh a user can program different scents to turn on at different times of the day.

iFresh uses nebulization diffusion to create sub 10 micron scent particles, allowing scents to spread quickly and efficiently while retaining the chemical integrity of the essential oils. von Allmen hopes that iFresh will provide an all-natural sustainable alternative to mainstream air fresheners.
