The Ethnic Living and Learning Community Leadership Studies ProgramFrequently Asked Questions
Living on the floor provides a living and learning space for students where they are surrounded by other participants in the program which helps develop and strengthen their sense of community. Living on the floor, students are able to experience first hand what it takes to build and sustain a multicultural community and adds to students overall experience in the program. Student who wish to join the ELLC, but do not reside on the ELLC floor may join as space is available. Priority is given to students who reside on the ELLC floor. Leadership Courses Courses taken during the first year experience are Leadership for the 21st Century and Understanding Privilege and Oppression in Contemporary US Society. Each class is 3 credit hours and meets Arts and Sciences core requirements. Students study leadership from a multicultural and global perspective while examining their roles and responsibilities in society as moral and ethical leaders. The study and practice of leadership is applicable to any discipline or interest. Multicultural Leaderhship and Critical Issues in Leadership are courses offered to sophomore, junior and senior ELLC students. ELLC Practicum The ELLC Practicum guides students through a process of learning that involves ways of understanding and expressing culturally competent leadership through experiences that challenge and inform them about what it means to live and learn in a multicultural community. Practicum is a 1credit hour elective. Leadership Retreats During retreats students are further engaged in the learning and practice of culturally competent leadership. They are guided through a series of interactive discussions, activities and skill building initiatives to solidify their understanding of leadership and community. |
