Growing Support for the Quality for Colorado Plan

Alumni
The Executive Committee of the CU-Boulder Alumni Association Board unanimously endorsed the Quality for Colorado plan and its goals to improve the quality of education at CU, while protecting students with financial need, on August 24, 2001.

Faculty

  • The Boulder Faculty Assembly approved a resolution in support of the Quality for Colorado plan on October 11, 2001. Following is the text of the resolution:

    Executive Committee
    Resolution: In Support of the Quality for Colorado Initiative
    BFA-R-6-1001

    Whereas the faculty of the University of Colorado at Boulder is fully committed to providing high-quality instruction at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; and

    Whereas the faculty is also dedicated to performing research, scholarly, and creative work of the highest quality; and

    Whereas the faculty recognizes the difficult challenges posed by the limited funding available to the University, and the resulting pressure to increase enrollment and to reduce admission standards; therefore let it be

    Resolved, that the Boulder Faculty Assembly strongly endorses the Quality for Colorado initiative proposed by Chancellor Byyny, which proposes to further strengthen our flagship campus by raising admission standards, eliminating the linkage between enrollment and funding, and increasing resident tuition to a level typical of our peer institutions. We believe that these steps are necessary to provide the resources needed by the College to successfully pursue excellence in teaching, research, and service; and to further enhance the contributions the College and its faculty make to the citizens of the State of Colorado and the nation.

  • The Arts and Sciences Council unanimously adopted a resolution supporting the Quality for Colorado initiative on September 20, 2001. Following is the text of the resolution:

    Resolution in support of Quality for Colorado Initiative

    Whereas the faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Colorado at Boulder is fully committed to providing high-quality instruction at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; and

    Whereas the faculty is also dedicated to performing research, scholarly, and creative work of the highest quality; and

Parents
The CU Parents Association Board of Directors unanimously endorsed the Quality for Colorado proposal on September 15, 2001.

City of Boulder
Boulder City Council members expressed general support for the Quality for Colorado initiative at a meeting with CU officials on September 28, 2001, and offered to provide an endorsement of the proposal to the Colorado Commission on Higher Education or the Legislature when needed.

Community
The Chancellor's Community Advisory Committee members are business people and representatives of non-for-profit organizations who provide advice and counsel, feedback, and guidance to the University of Colorado at Boulder leadership. This group wholeheartedly endorsed the Quality for Colorado proposal and urged a strong commitment to furthering its goals in the immediate future and for the long term.

Policy Makers
  • The University of Colorado Board of Regents unanimously endorsed the Quality for Colorado plan at its meeting on September 6, 2001.

  • The Colorado Commission on Higher Education discussed the Quality for Colorado initiative during an August 31, 2001 meeting in which they reviewed the 2002-03 budget request for higher education. CCHE Chair Ralph Nagel noted that the plan showed a "tremendous change from the discussions on the CU-Boulder master plan" and "strong strategic thoughts on moving the flagship campus forward." The Commission has asked the governor's Blue Ribbon Panel on Higher Education for the 21st Century to consider the initiative in 2002 as part of its examination of how higher education is financed.
