Minutes: 1-12-98Enclosed are minutes from our first meeting. Those of you who were not able to be there are beng sent material that was handed out at the meeting. Please let me know if you cannot attend the meeting on the 23rd. NCA Self Study Committee
Meeting Present: Brangwyn Foote and Bill Kaempfer (co-chairs), Hans L'Orange (for Ric Porreca), Jean Delney, Mar Swadener, Ofelia Miramontes Not Present: Susan Avery, Anne Bekoff (on leave), Shaun Dalrymple, Boyd Hill, David Pinkow Dr. Foote introduced the North Central Re-Accreditation process with past history and material from the last review conducted in 1990. Every 10 years institutions across the country go through a process of re-accreditation to assure that the institution is functioning according to the standards set by NCA. Letter from Chancellor Byyny including the charge to the committee was read and discussed. The question was raised as to whether the time line between getting a draft report done by May, 1999 and getting it approved by September, 1999 allowed sufficient time over the summer. The committee suggested changing the wording to complete by the "beginning" of May, 1999 and the final draft needed by the "end" of September, 1999. The committee reviewed materials in the notebook outlining what was to be included in the review and the self study report. The committee discussed special emphases for the study. They agreed that these were viable and appropriate, since both were in the campus strategic plan. They suggested broadening the area of Residential Academic Programs to Academic Neighborhoods and narrowing the area of Information Technology to Information Technology in Instruction. These suggestions will be sent back to the Chancellor for his response. The committee also felt strongly that attention to diversity should be included in each special emphasis. The chair will work on wording suggestions for the committee. The next committee meeting with be January 23, 1998, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Regent 302. At that time the committee will meet with the NCA liaison, Dr. Cecilia Lopez, who will help us develop our plan for the study. Brangwyn asked all committee members to read the material in the notebook and the last self study report prior to that meeting.
