CU-Boulder's Independent Learning courses require instructors to interact with the students on a regular basis based on the research stating that students want more instructor interaction. This will keep the students from feeling isolated and frustrated in distance learning environments. As students and instructors practice virtual communication, we will get better at it.

Every new medium has met objection at first, but as we adapt and find new ways of using a medium, we tend to assimulate the device into our society. A good example of technology integration is the use of overhead projectors. It took 40 years for the overhead projector to make it from the bowling alleys to the classroom, (Thornsburg, 2001) but overhead presentations have now been used effectively and are evolving into PowerPoint presentations.
