Comments and Decisions
Instructor
comments are the connection between students and learning. They motivate
students. They direct and redirect their efforts. Our second most consistent
gripe from students is about the instructor comments (lack of them,
scarcity of them, illegibility of them, etc., etc.). The rule of thumb
is to be professional. Please consider that a classroom student can
easily ask for more comments and for clarification. Our independent
learning students are less able to get more feedback once you have put
your comments in the mail.
Be especially
specific and complete when commenting on assignments and exams. Examinations
are not returned to students, but they can review exams and answers
with a proctor.
Generally,
the syllabus for your course contains information about how to prepare
assignments, how often to submit them and so on. Use caution in allowing
students to accelerate assignment submission. Students who submit multiple
assignments at the same time do not benefit from feedback and have no
chance to implement suggestions in succeeding assignments. In no case
should a student be allowed to finish in less than two (2) weeks per
semester hour (3 semester hours equals 6 weeks minimum).
You may
allow follow up work or rework, but you are only paid for the original
number of units in your course.
