Problem Set 5  Metal Complexation

1.  Problem 8.3 (Benjamin, 2002).  Silver-thiosulfate complexation.  The first part of the question asks for log C-log {S2O32-} graphs for pH 9 and pH 13.  Do parts (a) and (b) only.

2.  Problem 8.5 (Benjamin, 2002).  Mercuric-ammonia complexation.

3.  In some tracer transport experiments in a sand and gravel aquifer on Cape Cod conducted by Kent et al. (2002, "Effect of adsorbed metal ions on the transport of Zn- and Ni-EDTA complexes in a sand and gravel aquifer," Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta 66(17), 3017-3036), the transport of zinc and nickel was examined in the presence of calcium and EDTA.  For tracer test M89, determine the speciation of zinc and nickel in the injectate solution using Visual MINTEQ.  Ignore the presence of Cr(VI).  Assume the solution is open to the atmosphere, and PCO2 = 10-3.46 bar.  Report lists of species and their activities and concentrations for zinc and nickel.
