Dr. Diekmann's Biography


James Diekmann, a professor of Construction Engineering and Management, has been a faculty member at the University of Colorado at Boulder for more than 30 years. Since joining the faculty as an assistant professor in 1979, Dr. Diekmann has emphasized the importance of striking a balance between industry experience and academic knowledge. He utilizes both his industry and academic experiences to prepare students for academic, research, and industry related careers by challenging them to consider emerging ideas and by providing access to engineering and construction professionals, exposing students to real-world projects. During his tenure at the University of Colorado at Boulder, he has advised more than 75 M.S. and 18 Ph.D. students.

Dr. Diekmann has received numerous accolades including both engineering-construction and research-based honors. He is a recipient of the American Society of Civil Engineers Peurifoy Construction Research award and is a member of the National Academy of Construction. He serves as a consultant to a variety of national firms and governmental agencies.

Dr. Diekmann’s primary research interests are the application of computational methodologies to construction project management and construction engineering problems. He has a long standing interest in project risk analysis and decision making in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. Additionally, Dr. Diekmann is working to document the historical evolution in AEC processes and across different geographical regions. He is active with Engineers Without Borders (EWB) as the faculty advisor to the EWB-Nepal team.
