J-OPP West: Japan-Online Professional Programs for Western Teachers

The Program for Teaching East Asia is in the second year of J-OPP West, a project to provide online professional development courses and resources for K-12 teachers. The project is a joint project with the University of Washington East Asia Resource Center (EARC) and targets the states of Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Montana, and Nebraska. Teachers from other states are welcome to take advantage of online course offerings. J-OPP West is funded by the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership.

During the 2013-14 school year, J-OPP West is offering online courses in collaboration with the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) and with activites of the TEA and EARC outreach programs.

Book Group for Secondary Educators: March Was Mad of Yarn: Writers Respond to Japan's Earthquake, Tsunami, and Nuclear Meltdown, February 14 - March 22, 2014

Register now. This online book group is open to secondary teachers nationwide. Published in summer 2012, March Was Made of Yarn, a collection of short stories, non-fiction, poetry, and manga, was one of the first artistic efforts focusing on the “Triple Tragedy” of March 11, 2011. Writing while the effects of the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster were still unfolding, the diverse authors represented examine not only the immediate devastation and people’s responses, but hopes and fears for the future as well. The book group will occur through three asynchronous online modules. Book reimbursement and completion stipend provided. Offered by NCTA and the J-OPP project at TEA, in cooperation with J-OPP at the University of Washington East Asia Resource Center. Registration closes February 1 or when full. See full details here.

Texts and Contexts:  Teaching Japan through Children’s Literature

Register now. Open to elementary (K-5) teachers nationwide who teach world cultures, this 20-hour course will examine children’s literature about Japan and consider teaching ideas that integrate literacy and social studies strategies to teach world cultures, using the case of Japanese culture and history. Book Group: Memory and Art: New Books by Allen Say and Ed Young Look Back at Childhoods in Asia, February 8 - March 22, 2014.

This online book group offers a guided discussion of the 2011 memoirs for two beloved children's book author-artists. The memoirs offer rich resources for helping students explore Japanese and Chinese history and culture while addressing Common Core Standards. Click here for complete details, flyer, and application.
