Currently, CU undergraduates with an interest in studying Asia as a part of history, geography, literature, language, or other social science and humanitities disciplines have the opportunity to take advantage of these programs: Asia Day (funded in part), study abroad programs, tuition scholarships, and internships.
Center For Asian Studies Scholarships for the Study of East Asia
Freeman Foundation Scholarships for the Study of Asia
For undergraduate students of the University of Colorado at Boulder
The Freeman Foundation has made a generous grant to the University of Colorado at Boulder to promote and enhance the study of Asia. The grant includes scholarships to support undergraduate students in their study of Asia. Scholarships will be offered for the academic year 2008-09.
The Scholarship
The Center for Asian Studies Scholarships are for variable amounts to a maximum of $3000 per year ($1500 per semester). Students must take a minimum of three courses focused primarily on Asia, in any discipline, during the academic year in which they receive support. Continuation of the scholarship from one semester to the next is contingent upon earning a minimum of a B grade (3.0) in the student’s Asia-related classes and a cumulative grade point average of a 2.5.
Scholarships will be credited to the recipients’ tuition bill at the University of Colorado.
Scholarships may also be used for participation in a CU-sponsored study abroad program in Asia, as long as the applicant has not received other major scholarship support.
Eligibility for the scholarships
Full-time students who have declared a major in Asian Studies, Chinese, or Japanese are eligible to apply. In addition, students who have an Asian focus in a major in another department, such as History majors who choose China or Japan as their world area of focus, or International Affairs majors with an area emphasis in Asia, are also eligible. Students may consult a staff member at the Asian Studies offices about eligibility.
Full-time students who have not yet declared a major or who do not fit the above description may be eligible if they have taken a minimum of 12 semester hours at CU-Boulder, and completed at least two courses about Asia or courses with substantial focus on Asia.
Recipients will be selected on the basis of merit as determined by grade point average, recommendations, and the essay submitted with the application form. Consideration will also be given to the student’s commitment to the study of Asia as demonstrated in the academic record and essay.
The deadline for all application materials (including recommendation letters) is 12:00 noon on Monday, April 7, 2008. Applications are available at the Center’s offices at Norlin S423.
You can also e-mail CAS for an application at cas@colorado.edu or download one from the CAS website: http://www.colorado.edu/cas/studentsupport.html. Applications should be returned to the CAS office (Norlin S423) by the application deadline.
