Call for Proposals for study-travel in China (and surrounding countries)

CU faculty members are encouraged to submit pre-proposals to organize and teach an undergraduate course in China (or China and neighboring regions) in summer 2025 or later. (Note that faculty may propose offering a course AGAIN that has previously been approved and taught OR propose a new course at this time.) Previous experience in China is NOT required.

As part of the Tang Endowment for the Study of China, the Center for Asian Studies may have limited funding to help faculty prepare their course. Accepted pre-proposals will be eligible for consideration in the new Tang Faculty Fellows program. We plan to make two Faculty Fellows awards available, consisting of a course release and a $5,000 travel and development stipend to help defray course preparation costs. In addition, Faculty will receive a salary while teaching their summer course in China, in addition to having their expenses paid as part of the program fee. A central goal of the Tang Faculty Fellows program is to encourage diverse faculty from across campus (not just ‘China Studies faculty’) to consider developing a study-travel program in China.

Course proposals may focus on any topic related to China (or China and its neighbors) in any discipline, but should be designed to draw a diverse audience and encourage greater interest in East Asia among undergraduate students. Maximum use should be made of the location, on-site resources, and connections with local communities. Each course typically accommodates 15 students, and each student will receive a partial scholarship to subsidize participation.

Course design consists of two main areas of faculty responsibility: academic content and logistical practicalities. Pre-proposals will be reviewed by CAS for academic quality and relevance to Asian Studies. Logistical matters will be dealt with in the second phase of this competition, which will be developed in collaboration with the Education Abroad Office.

Pre-proposals should include

  • Draft syllabus for a three-credit undergraduate course
  • Explanation of how this course meets the goals of encouraging undergraduate student interest in the study of China and Asia, as well as how the course contributes to your career goals and development
  • Preliminary ideas about course location(s) and logistics
  • Preliminary budget and justification for use of Tang Faculty Fellow stipend.
  • Brief c.v.
  • Letter of support from your department chair for offering the course. (Can be sent with other materials or separately.)
