Summer Programs in Asia and Institutes
Teachers who have taken part in an NCTA seminar sponsored by TEA or other NCTA partner sites are eligible to apply to NCTA programs in Asia and summer institutes.
Programs in Asia
In 2012, NCTA is offering a two-week study program in China for alumni of NCTA seminars from the University of Colorado, University of Pittsburgh, University of Indiana, University of Washington, and Five College Center for East Asian Studies regions. This study program, coordinated by the NCTA National Coordinating Site at the University of Pittsburgh, will be conducted at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou. Tentative dates are July 8-22, 2012. Summer Institutes
2012 Summer Institutes
The following residential programs are offered as enrichment programs for NCTA alumni nationwide and are also open to teachers who have not previously taken NCTA programs.
Residential Summer Institute: "China: Environmental Issues and Challenges," June 25-29, 2012. Program for Teaching East Asia, University of Colorado-Boulder. Designed primarily for secondary social studies teachers, this institute will focus on broad questions and case studies to help teachers consider how China can balance the goals of economic development and environmental protection. Residential Summer Institute: "21st-Century Japan: Global Issues, Classroom Applications," July 8-13, 2012. NCTA at the Program for Teaching East Asia, University of Colorado-Boulder. This five-day program offers resources and materials to help teachers address current issues in Japan in the classroom. The institute will explore economic challenges, political reform, and social change in Japan, with special attention to Japan's recovery from the 2011 "triple tragedy." The institute also will explore societal and cultural trends expressed in art and literature for a rich picture of Japan today. Application deadline: March 16, 2012. Residential Workshop: "Teaching East Asian Literature in the High School Workshop," July 8-13, 2012. NCTA at Indiana University.
This workshop is designed for high school English and world literature teachers who are interested in incorporating Chinese, Japanese, and Korean literature into their curriculum. Following the workshop, each participant develops a complete lesson plan for at least one of the pieces covered in the workshop. Application deadline: March 5, 2012.
