Step 3

Apply and Authorize the College Opportunity Fund (COF)

What it is:

For Colorado Undergraduate Residents only:  The state has set aside money to help pay your bill. Instead of giving the money directly to CU, each student must let the state of Colorado know that they are enrolled in school. This process is called "applying and authorizing COF." This money is not based on financial need. It is available for all Colorado undergraduate residents. Students receive a pre-designated amount per credit hour.

You only have to apply once in your college career but you need to authorize every semester at time of registration.

Deadline: January 20 to avoid paying more for spring semester. (See the Registrar website for COF semester deadlines.)

How to do it:

  1. Apply at: https://cof.college-assist.org/.  Click on “Apply for a stipend.”  This is a one-time application. This step tells the state of Colorado that you are enrolling in college.
  2. Authorize EVERY semester on CUConnect when you register for classes. You will be prompted to authorize during the registration process. This step grants permission for the stipend to be applied to your tuition bill at CU.
  3. Check “View detail” on CUConnect under the financial tab after a couple days to see that the stipend has been applied. It will show on your tuition bill as "COLLEGE OPPORTUNITY FUND."

The University of Colorado at Boulder is an equal opportunity/nondiscrimination institution.
