Did you know that stretching can impact even the muscles you didn't stretch?

The Neurophysiology of Movement Laboratory is conducting a study to evaluate how stretching affects the neuromuscular function of the non-stretched muscles.

We are looking for healthy men between 18 and 55 years, without neurological impairments or recent lower-limb injuries. The study involves a two-hour visit to our lab on the CU Boulder Main Campus.

The University Libraries has signed a new contract with the academic publisher Elsevier that achieves a 30% cost reduction from the current contract, along with changes in how users will access some journal articles.

The CU Boulder Sustainability Council is a cross-campus group of students, faculty and staff established in 2022. The council’s purpose is to make recommendations regarding policies, programs, initiatives and investments to advance sustainability. These recommendations augment the work of the more recently formed Campus Sustainability Executive Council.

The Sustainability Council invites the CU Boulder community to attend an in-person open forum during their upcoming meeting on April 12 from 9 to 10:10 a.m. in Kittredge Central Multipurpose Room B. After introductions from the council, individuals will be invited to ask questions and propose sustainability ideas beyond the Climate Action Plan (which is being led by a different group). Comments should be kept to three minutes or less to allow for the maximum number of participants.

The current priorities of the council are plastics and zero waste, food, and transportation. To submit related or additional ideas that cannot be accommodated during the in-person open forum, complete this form.

In its seventh episode, the "Humans of JILA" podcast highlights the Partnerships for Informal Science Education in the Community (PISEC) program.

PISEC is an educational outreach program supported by JILA's Physics Frontier Center and CU Boulder. Its mission revolves around connecting university volunteers with local K-12 students. Through playful and engaging inquiry-based science activities, it aims to inspire underrepresented student groups in STEM.

Did you attend the forum with chancellor finalist Justin Schwartz? Campus community members are invited to take a survey, open through 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 9. 

The survey will take just 2–5 minutes to complete. The anonymous feedback will be compiled for CU President Todd Saliman’s review. Open to all students, faculty, staff and community members.

Graduating seniors at CU Boulder can take the Graduation Pledge of Social & Environmental Responsibility to get a green cord to wear at graduation to show their commitment to environmental and social responsibility in their future career. Green cords are now available for free—first come, first served—to the first 500 who pledge for May 2024 graduations. 

The Graduation Pledge of Social & Environmental Responsibility of the Graduation Pledge Alliance states: “I pledge to explore and take into account the social and environmental consequences of any job I consider and to try to improve these aspects of any organizations for which I work.”

Help the Environmental Center collect clothing, books, electronics, household goods, non-perishable food and personal care products during the Give and Go Donation Drive in the residence halls during move-out. Sign up for shifts May 6–8.

Many donated items are redistributed to local nonprofit organizations that provide goods to community members at little or no cost. Some items stay on campus to benefit students, staff and faculty. Last year we estimate that over 40% of donated items stayed on campus or in Boulder County.

This year the Buff Pantry and the Basic Needs Center on campus will be the first organizations to receive non-perishable food and personal care items. Once they have reached capacity for what they can accept, the Emergency Family Assistance Association—a local Boulder organization that provides food, financial assistance, and family housing—will pick up the remaining items. 

CU yard sale May 18

If you or anyone you may know is interested in purchasing any items from move-out, Resource Central will be hosting a CU yard sale on May 18. At this sale, you can shop items from move-out such as lamps, decorations, storage bins and fans.

Like in 2023, Resource Central will also hold an on-campus sale during fall move-in to provide incoming students with low-cost furnishings for their rooms.

A young man (21) in a wheelchair with Duchenne muscular dystrophy needs assistance with daily activities over the summer. The opportunity is located at his family home in Cherry Creek North while he is on break from CU Boulder. He has a great sense of humor, loves watching sports and enjoys playing Xbox. He is physically but not cognitively impaired.

• Dates: May 6–Aug. 23 (approximate)
• Shifts available: 8–11 a.m. and/or 5:30–8:30 p.m. with some flexibility. Monday–Friday and/or weekends.  
• Compensation: $19–$23/hour
• Benefits: You will be employed directly with a home health care agency, so benefits like medical/dental/401(k) are available over 30 hours/week, plus sick leave and PTO.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the general care and well-being for the client
• Transfer client using a hoyer-lift
• Assist with dressing/undressing, and personal hygiene (showering, nail care, brushing teeth, etc.)
• Bathroom assistance and general oversight
• Preparing and/or assisting with meals depending on the shift
• Light housekeeping and organization (supplies, medications, etc.)
• Assist client as needed due to immobility
• Physical therapy exercises, occasional walks and general companionship

Previous experience is helpful but not required. There will be on-site training done, a nurse on call that can help with any care questions, along with the client’s parents who can be reached with questions and, often times, will be able to assist. Parking pass/spot provided in front of home. Background check is required.

CU Boulder students: Don't miss your opportunity to ask Coach Prime a question in person during the Conference on World Affairs closing keynote on April 12. Ten students will be chosen based on the quality of their question and will receive front-row seating at the Macky Auditorium event. During the event, they will be given the microphone to ask their question to Coach Prime live.

Microsoft recently released a new version of the Teams app that is available now for all campus users. OIT recommends all users switch to the new version before being forced to upgrade later this spring. The new client is simple to download directly from the current version of the Teams app: Click the “Try the new Teams” toggle switch in the top toolbar of the app, and the new version will begin installation.
