Frequently asked questions:

I have a U-lock - is it defeatable as shown on the news?

Media organizations have recently publicized a way to defeat tubular-cylinder bicycle and other locks. Many popular U-locks, cable locks and other forms of bicycle locks are susceptible to this new failure.

While U-locks continue to be the top choice for securing your bicycle on campus, there are a few steps that need to be taken to ensure maximum security. Check with lock manufacturers to see if their model has been adapted or is exempt of this deficiency. Kryptonite and Master Lock both have improved models.

Kryptonite, our recommended lock manufacturer has more information here. More information on the tubular-cylindar lock settlement here.

What do I need to know about riding on campus?

  1. Boulder is not like other big cities; it's easy to ride here.
  2. All bikes on campus must be registered.
  3. Pedestrians always have the right of way.
  4. Bicycles must enter crosswalks at walking speed or slower.
  5. Always use a U-lock to attach the frame of your bicycle to the bike rack. Cables, no matter how thick, are too easy to cut.
  6. Wear a helmet!
  7. The bike station provides free basic maintenance.

How do I find a used bike?

For short-term rentals, try out a buff bike. Buff bikes are single-speed cruiser bicycles, available free for two days.

The CU Bike Club is also offering semesterly rentals of town bikes (usually 10-speed). Contact them at bikeclub@colorado.edu.

For long-term solutions, check out a few places:

I have a flat tire, rusty chain or loose bolt, where can I get it fixed?

The bike station provides free basic bike maintenance and instruction on all registered bicycles. Drop by to visit our friendly staff.

If you need more extensive repair, visit local bike shops listed on the links page.

Does CU auction unclaimed/impounded bicycles?

No. CU no longer holds bicycle auctions. Unclaimed and impounded bicycles are held for 30 days and then donated to charity.

If you believe your bicycle was impounded please call 303-492-2322.
