Student life: CU-Boulder ultimate player takes home national award

Jimmy Mickle is a bio-tech lab assistant, a CU-Boulder graduate who studied chemical and biological engineering, and the winner of this year’s Callahan Award – the equivalent of the Heisman Trophy in USA Ultimate terms.

Correcting for the weather: Studying how wind, rain can affect cycling performance

Last fall, computer science major and avid cyclist William Luce and a friend turned their bikes east onto Niwot Road north of Boulder.

“There was a storm blowing in and there was a 40 mph wind coming right off the foothills and blowing straight east,” he said. “We pedaled as hard as we could with this tailwind at our backs.”

When Luce got back home, he uploaded the GPS data he’d recorded during his ride to an online program called Strava, which compared his performance to all other cyclists who had ever ridden and recorded their times for that section of road in the past.

Board of Regents approves CU-Boulder College of Media, Communication and Information

The University of Colorado Board of Regents today voted 8-0 with one Regent absent to approve the new College of Media, Communication and Information at the Regents’ monthly meeting, held at the Tivoli Center at the University of Colorado Denver. The college will open in fall 2015.

Griffin takes the helm at the Conference on World Affairs

On June 1 John Griffin became the fourth director of the Conference on World Affairs since its inception in 1948. An Associate Professor of political science at CU, Griffin will step down from his post as Director of the LeRoy Keller Center for the Study of the First Amendment to direct the CWA.

Shahan donates funds to celebrate Boulder and support graduate students

English alumnus Dick Shahan recently made a $75,000 gift commitment to CU-Boulder — $50,000 of which established an endowment to create the Dick Shahan CU-Boulder Undergraduate Writing Competition, expected to generate an annual prize of $2,000 for a prose piece that features Boulder. The additional $25,000 will fund the Shahan Graduate Fellowships in the CU-Boulder English Department, providing an annual $1,000 research grant for an English graduate student.

Simons named Director of Institutional Equity and Compliance, assumes Title IX coordinator role

Chancellor DiStefano today announced that CU-Boulder has hired education and civil rights lawyer Valerie Simons to serve as the director of institutional equity and compliance, effective July 22.

The newly created position, which includes the role of Title IX coordinator for the campus, reports directly to DiStefano and has campuswide oversight for all complaints of discrimination, which are currently investigated through both the Office of Student Conduct and the Office of Discrimination and Harassment. 

Public-health study now an undergrad option

If the state of the world is flat, hot and crowded, the field of public health is large, diffuse and complex. That’s why the University of Colorado Boulder is giving students the ability to earn an interdisciplinary certificate in public health.
