Resources: Health & Safety

Asbestos

Like most universities with buildings dating to the 1970s, the CU-Boulder campus includes a number of facilities built with materials that contain asbestos. To help in the prevention of unnecessary disturbance of asbestos, it is important for you to not disturb any building materials in CU-Boulder facilities.

Closing Campus

Hazardous storms and other emergencies occasionally force the campus to close. Closures for emergencies that occur at night normally are announced by 6:00 a.m. Daytime closures or evacuations are announced as decisions are made. Information on the nature of the emergency and any necessary instructions will be posted on the CU-Boulder website and sent via campus text alerts.

Counseling and Psychological Services

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) offers free individual and group counseling and workshops for all CU-Boulder students. All contacts are confidential.

Crises

From time to time, we all have difficulties with our personal relationships, social life, classes, or finances. As a result, we may feel depressed or anxious without being able to link these feelings to a single problem. Other crises arise when we are victims of physical assault, harassment, or discrimination; have a serious substance abuse problem; or feel violent or suicidal. If you find yourself in a crisis, don’t hesitate to call the Office of Victim Assistance at 303-492-8855.

Disability Services

Disability Services’ mission is to provide students with disabilities the tools, reasonable accommodations, and support services to participate fully in the academic environment. Furthermore, their mission is to promote an accessible and culturally sensitive campus through outreach and by building partnerships within the university community and beyond.

Emergencies

In case of emergency—when seconds count—call 9-1-1. Know how and when to call to save a life, report a fire, or stop a crime. You can call 9-1-1 from any telephone, and emergency outdoor telephones are also located strategically throughout the campus.

For general fire safety guidelines and information please visit the campus Fire and Life Safety webpage at www.colorado.edu/facilitiesmanagement/pdc/safety.

Environmental Health and Safety

The Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) department provides comprehensive health and safety services to the CU-Boulder campus community. EH&S also provides leadership in environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance assistance to the campus community.

First-Year Students

First-year students have many exciting new opportunities and face a number of potential challenges. Those who become involved in their university community, both inside and outside the classroom, typically perform at higher levels in both the academic and personal aspects of their lives. Connect with your peers, meet regularly with faculty members, or touch base with a resident advisor (RA) to find out about the  many resources and experiences that the university has to offer. The choices you make in the first year have a huge impact on what kind of Buff you will be at CU and beyond.
