Brief Course Description:
Interdisciplinary Performance will focus on the collaborative work of multiple
students/artists/thinkers in the creation of original performance works,
and the creative exploration of technology. The class will culminate
with a final public performance at the end of the sememster. The class
will draw on the talents of individual students, providing the means and
context in which they can find a voice with their peers in other fields.
We will also examine how artists have worked together in the past (and
present), and ways different arts have been combined into new hybrids,
using these observations as a starting point for the creation of new work.
The course will consider everything from dance, theater, film, the visual
arts, sculpture, installation, performance art, music, musical theater,
to ritual and ceremony, along with applications of computer technology,
and projections. Various computer skills will be taught in the class, including
video and sound editing, as well as real-time video and sound processing.
You do not need to be a performer to be a student in this class, nor do
you need to have a formal artistic background. The primary requirement
is a desire to explore new possibilities, and to work hard with other students
to create new forms of expression.
Michelle Spencer is a multi-media performance artist and dancer
Michael Theodore is a classically trained composer whose work involves
both acoustic instruments and live electronic processing of sound and image
