Advising

Dave Kalahar, adviser

Students interested in Technology, Arts and Media programs meet with Dave Kalahar, who advises students and tracks their progress in the program. He creates the teaching schedules, gets the courses onto the University system, and registers students into the ATLS courses. Kalahar also coordinates student access to the ATLAS building, ATLAS registration Open House, graduation receptions, movie nights, and schedules campus courses into the ATLAS classrooms. Kalahar has been employed at the University of Colorado at Boulder since 1983. Prior to coming to ATLAS, Kalahar was the undergraduate academic adviser in Aerospace Engineering Sciences for 14 years. In that time, he was the recipient of Outstanding adviser awards from both the University of Colorado at Boulder and the College of Engineering and Applied Science, and garnered additional advising accolades from the Minority Engineering Program, Athletics Department and Air Force ROTC.

Advising Hours
Walk-in hours are from 8a.m.-3:30pm Monday-Thursday. However, appointments are encouraged and can be scheduled to mutual benefit. To schedule an advising appointment, please contact ATLAS curriculum adviser Dave Kalahar by writing to Kalahar@colorado.edu and providing a couple different days and times you can meet for about 20 minutes. He will then reply and schedule an appointment. Students also can telephone 303.735.6588 to schedule an appointment.

Kalahar works with students of all majors to help them integrate the TAM program into their schedules and academic goals.

Aileen Pierce, Instructor

Aileen Jaitin Pierce has been an instructor for the Technology, Arts, and Media program at the University of Colorado at Boulder since 2004. Pierce teaches courses focusing on the intersection of technology and society, as well as the integration of programming into new media. Pierce holds a B.S. in Math/Computer Science from Carnegie-Mellon University. She spent nine years in Silicon Valley working at Oracle and two startups in product marketing and technical support before moving to Boulder.

Kathie Broyles, Adjunct Instructor

Kathie Broyles is a CU grad and has recently returned to Boulder after 25 years in the entertainment advertising and promotion business. Formerly senior vice president and creative director CBS Marketing Group, CBS Network, she has created successful and award-winning campaigns in all aspects of entertainment -- music, movies and television, across all platforms -- print, outdoor, Web, digital, film and the outer net. Before joining CBS she ran her own boutique agency where her clients included Disney, Warner Bros, Sony, 20th Century Fox, DreamWorks, Fox Television, The WB, E! and HBO, among others. In addition to her professional responsibilities, Broyles served on several advisery boards and taught and guest lectured at many respected institutions. Currrently she is teaching at the ATLAS Institute at the University of Colorado and is a member of the ATLAS Advisery Board.

John Flynt, Adjunct Instructor

John Flynt has a doctorate from the University of Colorado and graduate degrees from the University of Chicago. His formal areas of study have led to degrees in computer science, language and literature, and the social sciences. He teaches for both the ATLAS program and in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Over the past three decades, he has taught courses in his areas of study at various colleges in the Rocky Mountain region and at NYU. His publications include Teaching Using Computer Game Development (2009), Beginning Pre-Calculus for Game Developers (2007), In the Mind of a Game (2006), and Software Engineering for Game Developers (2005), in addition to short fantasy and science fiction published in such media as Tomorrow.

Ian Hales, Instructor

Ian Hales is a graphic artist and designer who is currently an instructor at the University of Colorado, Boulder,in the Technology, Arts, and Media program. Hales is a CU graduate from the School of Fine Arts and teaches courses focusing on digital art, 2D and 3D animation, new media design, as well as gaming and virtual societies. Hale's work strives to push the standard conception of digital art and graphic design and establish new methods of conveying themes and ideas in visual mediums.

David Schaal, Lead Multimedia Instructor

David Schaal is a digital artist showing work nationally and internationally and is currently the lead instructor for the TAM program. He received a BFA in Fine Art, a BA in Psychology, and an MFA in Integrated Art. He has developed and taught Technology, Arts Media courses since the program's founding in 1998 and was the first faculty hire in ATLAS. He is interested in all aspects of digital culture and media theory. He serves on the steering committee for ASSETT, a CU advisory group exploring issues of teaching and technology, is education director for the Communikey Festival of Electronic Arts and as a board member for ICAS (International Cities for Advanced Sound).

Joel Swanson is an artist and writer who is currently the director of the Technology, Arts and Media program at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He teaches courses on digital art, media theory, and the history of design. He received his MFA in digital art at the University of California, San Diego. His art work is motivated by literary theory and exists as a series of installations, both real and virtual, that explore the nature of language and its embodiment. Swanson's work has been shown in various national and international venues. His work can be seen online at joelswanson.net.
