How to Apply for the ATLAS Ph.D. Program

To apply for admission to the ATLAS Institute Ph.D. in Technology, Media
and Society, you will need to submit the following materials by:
• Jan. 9* 2013 for fullest funding consideration;
• Feb. 3* 2013 to be considered for admission for fall 2013.
(*Please note that the Graduate School's deadline for applications by foreign
students is Dec. 1st and takes precedence over the departmental deadline.)

1. Official transcripts from all institutions of higher learning that you have attended (only one copy of each transcript is required).

2. At least three, and no more than five, letters of recommendation from individuals qualified to judge your potential for success in graduate school. Letters may be submitted by recommenders online or sent to the appropriate address above directly by the recommenders.

3. Graduate Record Exam scores, general exam only. If you have not taken the GRE within the past two years, please include a statement explaining your reasons for requesting a waiver of this requirement. Online GRE testing is available frequently.
GRE codes are: Institution Code: R4841, Department Code: 5101.

4. If you are a foreign student and your native language is not English, you need to submit a documented TOEFL score. The minimum required score for consideration is 600 (250*) (100**).
The TOEFL codes are: Institution: 4841, Department: 99.
* Equivalent score based on the computer-administered TOEFL.

5. A 4-5 page proposed program of study (submitted online) which includes:
• A statement describing as specifically as you can your interdisciplinary research interests. What do you propose to study and why does your area of study require multi-departmental work as opposed to work within a single academic department?
• A tentative program of study (departments you wish to work with, appropriate courses from our existing course list or others that you may know of, any faculty whom you already wish to work with)
• A statement describing your longer-term goals. Why and how would an ATLAS Ph.D. support your long-term career plans?
• A description of how your background qualifies you for interdisciplinary, ICT (information communication technology)-related Ph.D. work. How have you demonstated in the past a commitment to interdisciplinary study? What is your preparation for focusing on ICTIT-related issues?

6. A resume.

7. An optional portfolio of your work, submitted either as a URL pointing to online work or as a CD or DVD. This portfolio might comprise design or multimedia production or performance, samples of research papers, or other digital documents relevant to your application. Please clearly credit all authors and collaborators on each work. A URL may be included on your resume and/or in your written statement (please include login and password information if your site is password protected).
