T.V Raman - Research Scientist, Google, Inc.
T.V Raman earned his Ph.D. from Cornell University and now works in Google’s Research Division. Formerly of Adobe Systems and IBM Research, he filed more than 20 patents during his six years of work in advanced technology development at IBM. His areas of expertise include auditory interfaces, scripting languages, Internet technologies such as Webserver applications, and Web standards.
Blind since the age of 14 from glaucoma, Raman continued his early love of puzzles and games by solving a braille labeled Rubik’s cube, writing computer programs and pursuing a career in the sciences. Raman attended Cornell University, earning a MS in computer science and a PhD in applied mathematics. His PhD thesis entitled Audio System For Technical Readings (AsTeR) was awarded the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award in 1994.
In addition to his published dissertation, Raman has written a number of books such as XForms: XML Powered Web Forms (2003), Auditory User Interfaces: Toward the Speaking Computer (1997) and he wrote the preface to Spoken Dialogue Technology (2004) in addition to dozens of journal publications. As a recent N.Y. Times article highlighted, he is currently working on a touch screen phone that can be accessed by blind users.
