Graduate Program

The Department of Art and Art History at the University of Colorado offers two graduate degrees: Master of Arts in Art History (M.A.) and Master of Fine Arts in Creative Arts (M.F.A.). The Master of Fine Arts is the terminal degree for creative arts. It is intended to provide students with the necessary competence for professional careers in ceramics, painting, drawing, photography, digital art, video, printmaking, sculpture, and teaching careers. The Master of Arts in Art History degree provides students with a broad general knowledge of the field as well as the opportunity to begin to specialize within an area of interest

One of the greatest strengths of the Department of Art and Art History is its productivity. The faculty are extremely active in both research and creative work, with strong emphasis on the quality of teaching and mentoring. The creative arts faculty exhibits regionally, nationally and internationally. The Art History faculty has distinguished itself with a large number of important publications. A second strength of the Department is the accessibility of its faculty and open communication between the various disciplines. This combination of professional activity and quality instruction makes the graduate program at the University of Colorado exceptional.

Undergraduate Program

The Fine Arts Department offers three undergraduate degrees:

Bachelor of Arts in Art History (B.A.A.H.)
Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art (B.A.S.A.)
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Arts (B.F.A.)

Both B.A. Studio Arts and B.A. Art History degrees allow students to take a wide variety of courses. Students may combine their interest in Fine Arts with courses from other Departments, Art Education, or Art History.

The B.F.A. Degree requires more Fine Arts courses. It is considered more professional for art related careers such as college teaching, employment as an artist, working in a gallery or museum and so forth.
