The Department of Art and Art History offers five degrees:
Bachelor of Arts in Art History
Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Arts
Master of Arts in Art History
Master of Fine Arts

In addition to a commitment to mentoring students individually, we offer small undergraduate and graduate classes that encourage a free expression of ideas. Scholarships are available to graduate and undergraduate students within the department.

The Department of Art and Art History Internship Program allows upper-level undergraduate majors to work with institutions, programs, businesses, and individuals in the arts. Students may receive up to 6 hours of academic credit while exploring the links between their undergraduate fine arts major and a future career in the arts. Interested students should contact the department’s main office for further information.

The Visiting Artist Program and Visiting Scholar Program complement the pedagogical goals of the department by bringing internationally renowned artists, critics, and historians to campus. These visitors foster important public dialogues about visual culture and expand the diversity of our program.

Additional resources include the Visual Resources Center, the Exhibitions Program of the CU Art Museum, the Colorado Collection (an art collection of approximately 5,000 pieces), the Art & Architecture Library (with over 100,000 volumes and over 500 journal subscriptions) and the Metal and Wood Shops. In addition, the Department houses two computing labs with Macintosh computers and various graphics programs which are updated regularly.

Lastly, our department has a strong commitment to community outreach. In response to State cutbacks and the increased need for arts instruction in our public schools, we implemented ArtsBridge programming in 2002 with the support of a University of California Irvine FIPSE grant. The goal of CU ArtsBridge is to work in partnership with Boulder Valley School District, St. Vrain School District, and Denver Public School District to provide visual literacy to K-12 school children. Using art as a “bridge,” we aim to provide public school students an enriched education.
