Prof. Conlin specializes in the art, architecture and archaeology of ancient Rome. After receiving her Ph.D. in Classical Art and Archaeology from the Interdepartmental Program in Classical Art and Archaeology at the University of Michigan in 1993, Prof. Conlin published her first award winning book, The Artists of the Ara Pacis: The Process of Hellenization in Roman Relief Sculpture (Chapel Hill 1997). An expert on Roman marble carving techniques, styles and restorations, Prof. Conlin is currently examining the style, production and iconography of public sculptures produced during the Flavian Period. Her next monograph, Political Art in Flavian Rome (under contract with Cambridge University Press), explores the intersections and multivalent symbolism of style, imperial iconography and Silver Age literature during the reign of Domitian.

In addition her art historical research, Prof Conlin is co-director of the Colorado/Kalamazoo/Comune di Roma archaeological excavations at the Villa of Maxentius on the Via Appia in Rome. The Villa of Maxentius project combines a multi-year research program with a student field school to excavate the residential buildings of this pivotal imperial complex in the suburbs of Rome. Prof. Conlin’s archaeological project addresses the design, site selection and eventual fate of this early fourth century C.E. structure built by the self-declared pagan emperor Maxentius a short time before his defeat at the hands of Constantine the Great at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312. Undergraduate and graduate art history students are encouraged to apply for admission to the archaeological field school.

Prof. Conlin holds a joint appointment in the Departments of Art and Art History and Classics. She teaches undergraduate survey courses in art history and classical archaeology and a more advanced survey course on the art and architecture of Rome and the Roman Empire. She also offers advanced topics courses on Roman sculpture, Roman architecture, ancient Italian painting, Greek sculpture and narratives in ancient and medieval art. At the graduate level, Prof. Conlin offers seminars on Hellenistic art and archaeology, Augustan Rome, the topography of ancient Rome and Roman numismatics.
