OVERVIEW

The arts are an increasingly important field of study, shaping and influencing everyday aspects of our contemporary community. To keep pace with the rapid growth of the department, community and campus interest in the visual arts, construction has begun on this state-of-the-art building. The Department of Art and Art History's innovative, cross disciplinary programs are characterized by excellence in art history, ceramics, digital arts, drawing, foundations, integrated arts, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, film and video.

The CU Art Museum features cutting-edge and historical exhibitions of international, national and regianal significance. Its mission is to enhance public appreciation of art as well as to facilitate research about larger societal issues through a greater understanding of the arts. The museum's exhibitions are accompanied by an array of public educational programs, including gallery lectures, conferences, and symposia.

Highlights include:

• 170,000 gross square feet
• $63.5 million capital cost
• Funding from student fees, state and university funds and private gifts
• Designed to achieve LEED certification: (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for environmental sustainability
• Award winning architects: Kallmann, McKinnell & Wood Architects (Boston)
and OZ Architecture (Denver)

A crossroads for artistic and intellectual pursuits, the VAC reflects CU-Boulder’s commitment to liberal arts education and the lifelong benefits of critical thinking. The VAC will enhance students’ visual literacy through theoretical and critical investigations of visual culture and visual communication. Its mission is dedicated to cultivating imagination and creativity, as well as encouraging dialogue about and access to visual arts, art history, and visual culture.

The VAC will incorporate environmentally sustainable building strategies for water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. Leading by example, the project is expected to spur construction of other educational, commercial and green building throughout Colorado and the nation.
