Getting Caught with a Fake ID

Boulder liquor stores and bars are strict about checking IDs and making sure they are valid. Aside from consequences of jail time, fines, court costs, required community service, possible loss of your driver’s license, and/or alcohol classes, the potential criminal offense charge that may be left on your record is not attractive.

Below is a list of the criminal offenses in which different forms of fake IDs may result . Some of them are classified as felonies. You also may be charged with underage drinking (a misdemeanor or petty offense).

  • Altering your own ID (i.e., stenciling an incorrect birth date) is forgery.
  • Using an ID with another person’s name and picture is criminal impersonation.
  • Creating a fake ID from scratch is forgery.
  • Using another person’s birth certificate to obtain an ID with your picture, but with their name and birth date, is both forgery and criminal impersonation.
  • Having a fake ID with intent to use it to obtain alcohol is criminal possession of a forged instrument.
