University Alcohol and Drug Policies:

CU-Boulder is committed to excellence in all aspects of personal and academic life. We recognize that alcohol abuse is a significant impediment to achieving this goal. The university complies with all federal, state, and local laws concerning alcohol and illegal drugs. As a CU-Boulder student, you are responsible for acquainting yourself with the laws and university policies regarding alcohol and illegal drugs.

Sanctions for Alcohol and Drug Offenses*

  • 1st Offense
    • Parental notification
    • 5 hours community service
    • Attend Focus on Alcohol Concerns class ($137 fee)
    • Probation (very serious warning for out-of-line behavior) for one full semester
  • 2nd Offense
    • Parental notification
    • 10 hours community service
    • Referral to City 2nd Offender program ($360 fee)
    • Subject to suspension (removal from the university) for one semester if currently on probation for 1st offense
  • 3rd Offense
    • Parental notification

* Sanctioning of alcohol and drug violations may be more severe if the incident involves aggravating factors. Consult the Student Conduct Code for more information.

Good Samaritan Provision

This policy allows that whenever a student assists an intoxicated individual in procuring the assistance of local or state police, CU-Boulder night security, residence life staff, or medical professionals, neither the intoxicated person nor the person who assists may be subject to formal university disciplinary actions. This policy does not excuse or protect those individuals or organizations that deliberately or repeatedly violate the university’s alcohol policy.
