August 30, 2007 Film Screening Close to 300 alumni, students, faculty and staff of the Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences had a rare opportunity to view “In the Shadow of the Moon” before release to the general public, courtesy of distributor THINKFilm Company. Directed by David Sington, the movie has rare NASA footage of launches and interior shots of astronauts during their missions. The story of how Man landed on the Moon, told through interviews of the surviving crew members from all nine Apollo missions, held the audience riveted as the astronauts confided their thoughts during takeoff, upon seeing the blue ball of Earth for the first time, or the surface of the Moon with its lifeless landscape set against the blackness of space. A raffle held before the movie included posters of the film and two photographs of the actual images on Mission Control computers of the first step on the Moon by Astronaut Neal Armstrong. A reception for alumni, faculty, and grad students was held in the UMC following the movie. August 23, 2007 Former Astronaut Loren Shriver spoke to students, faculty and staff of Aerospace Engineering Sciences about his experiences in space and other highlights of his 30-year career with NASA, and presented a $10,000 check to the AES department. Shriver is a veteran of space flights in 1985, 1990, and 1992, and later served as space shuttle program manager for launch integration at the Kennedy Space Center. Currently, Shriver is vice president and chief technology officer of United Space Alliance, a company jointly owned by Boeing and Lockheed Martin which is under contract with NASA to operate the space shuttle fleet and the international space station.
