JOB: Summer RESEARCH opportunities at NIST in Boulder and Gaithersburg, MD!

Looking for a great job doing research at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) this coming summer? There are opportunities at both the Boulder, Colorado location (see http://surf.boulder.nist.gov/ for more information) and the Gaithersburg, Maryland location (see http://www.nist.gov/surfgaithersburg/index.cfm for more information).

If you are interested, you must apply for the NIST Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program in the next few weeks (deadline to Terry Mayes Monday, February 6th, 2012). NIST is interested in students majoring in science, engineering, computer science and mathematics, who have a GPA of 3.0 or better and who will continue their undergraduate education in the fall of 2012 (that leaves out any students planning to graduate in May or August of 2012).  For more information re: eligibility requirements, see: http://www.nist.gov/surfboulder/eligibility.cfm (for Boulder), and

http://www.nist.gov/surfgaithersburg/elig.cfm (for Gaithersburg).

The student application form allows students to indicate in which opportunities they are most interested. NIST has positions for approximately 22 students in Boulder and approximately 130 in Gaithersburg. Top ranked students will be matched to opportunities according to the student’s preferences and research interests. The SURF NIST Boulder program will run from May 21st (May 23rd for Gaithersburg) through August 3rd (August 5th for Gaithersburg), 2012.

Because applications for participation in the SURF NIST programs are accepted only from colleges and universities, and not from individual students, you will need to complete the student application and submit it to Terry Mayes no later than Monday, February 6th. In addition, students must provide copies of their transcripts, two letters of recommendation, and a letter of intent or personal statement. The letter should contain information that helps both the college and NIST make an informed decision about whether the student would be a good match, such as why the student wants to participate in the SURF program and what areas of NIST research most interest the student.  This is a competitive selection process, as only 8 student applicants from CU may be forwarded to the NIST-SURF program in Boulder, and only 8 student applicants to the NIST-SURF program in Gaithersburg.  The 8 selected applicants for each location will be sent along with the necessary institution information by NIST’s February 15th deadline.

The application can be found at the following website: http://www.nist.gov/surfboulder/app.cfm (for Boulder) and http://www.nist.gov/surfgaithersburg/app.cfm (for Gaithersburg).  If you wish to apply, please take some time to review the attached FAQs document.  It will answer many of your questions and will help you submit a good application package, thereby improving both your chances of being included in the final application package, and improving your chances for being selected for one of these coveted slots!

Please review the website mentioned above for more information, or contact Terry Mayes if you need additional information or assistance in preparing your application package: terry.mayes@colorado.edu, 303-735-6446.

The 2012 NASA Academy Application is now open!

The Academies are intensive educational programs which emphasize group activities, teamwork, research, leadership and creativity. The curriculum balances direct contact with science and engineering R&D with an awareness of the managerial, political, financial, social and human issues faced by aerospace professionals. Included are seminars, informal discussions, evening lectures, supervised research, visits to other NASA Centers and facilities, group project/s, tours, posters/presentations, and assessment. Additionally, most weekends are filled with group activities, team building and off-site trips. One free weekend is scheduled.

The Academy is not a 9-5 summer research internship program. It is a rigorous, immersive experience that will challenge you and push you outside of your comfort zones. It offers participants an intense learning experience that is either Space- or Aeronautics-based. All academy students will be immersed in a NASA environment where they will experience the agency from both inside and outside perspectives. Additionally, added interaction with NASA collaborators in industry and academia will provide unique, exciting and unforgettable summer experience designed to engage and capture students within the NASA family.

The Academies have separate focus areas: Space/Aerospace (NASA Academy), Robotics, Aeronautics, Lunar and Planetary Science, and Propulsion.

The deadline is January 23, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. EST.

You may access it at http://AcademyApp.com

This application serves the following programs:

 *   The NASA Academy at Ames Research Center (Mountain View, CA)
 *   The NASA Academy at Glenn Research Center (Cleveland, OH)
 *   The NASA Academy at Marshall Space Flight Center (Huntsville, AL)
 *   The NASA Aeronautics Academy at Ames Research Center (Cleveland, OH)
 *   The NASA Aeronautics Academy at Dryden Flight Research Center (Edwards AFB, CA)
 *   The NASA Aeronautics Academy at Glenn Research Center (Cleveland, OH)
 *   The NASA Aeronautics Academy at Langley Research Center (Hampton, VA)
 *   The NASA Lunar and Planetary Science Academy at Goddard Space Flight (Greenbelt, MD)
