Professional Area Electives

Q. What are Professional Area Electives (PAEs) and how many credits do I have to complete?

A. Professional Area Electives are 3000, 4000, & 5000-level Math, Science & Engineering Courses.  Students can use PAE courses to specialize their degree focus.  Aerospace majors must complete 12 credit hours of Professional Area Electives.

Q. Where can I find a list of Professional Area Electives?

A. Since PAEs are 3000, 4000 or 5000-level Math, Science or Engineering courses there is not an official list. However, here is a LIST of PAEs that are available.  Students must make sure that they have the prerequisites for the courses.  Please view the University Course Catalog, the department or Course Search to obtain the most current information about each course.  Some courses are not technical in nature (i.e. ASEN 3036 Introduction to Human Spaceflight which counts as a UD HSS course) so if you are not sure please contact Claire.

A. Another source is to look at the Graduate Program Focus Areas.  For specific courses and course numbers, please read the Graduate Handbook.  Graduate Courses in ASEN are restricted to graduate students and BS/MS students.  Seniors will need instructor consent to take 5000-level ASEN courses.  To obtain instructor consent, please email the instructor and give them your GPA. If they approve of your enrollment into their class they will need to either email Ann or Claire to register you for the class.

Q. What are some courses that ASEN students have found useful and interesting?

A. The 5000-level ASEN courses are all excellent but they are restricted to graduate students and students currently enrolled in the Aerospace BS/MS program. Seniors in ASEN need instructor consent in order to take the class.

A. APPM 3310-3 Matrix Methods is a great class for aerospace majors.  I call it "The Great A-ha Class" because students get more "a-ha" moments during the ASEN classes if they have taken it.  Also, if you are interested in doing the BS/MS, this class is a must. If you plan to take ASEN 5014, 5070, 5007 then you should definitely take Matrix Methods.

A. EMEN 5080-3 Engineering Ethics.  Many students have commented on how much they liked this class and how useful it was to them.  It is normally offered in the spring.

A. ASEN 4114/5114-3 Automatic Control Systems (fall only)

A. ASEN 4519-010 Aerobotics/Microavionics (fall only)

A. ASEN 4138-3 Aircraft Design (fall only)

A. ASEN 4148/5148-3 Spacecraft Design (spring only)

A. ASEN 4178-3 Human Factors in Engineering & Design

A. APPM 4650-3 Numerical Analysis 1 (offered fall & spring)

A. APPM 4350-3 Fourier Series (fall only)

A. APPM 4360-3 Complex Variables (spring only)

A. APPM 3350-3 Advanced Engineering Calculus (fall only)

A. ASEN 4123-3 Vibration Analysis (fall only)

A. ASEN 4222-3 Composite Manufacturing

A. MCEN 3025-3 Component Design

A. ASTR 4800-3 Space Scienc: Practice & Policy
