The Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder has received major recognition as a top ten aerospace program, according to U.S. News & World Report.

CU Boulder’s aerospace graduate program is ranked No. 8 in the nation and No. 5 among public institutions whose highest degree is a doctorate, according to the publication’s annual ‘Best Graduate Schools’ issue.

“We here at CU Boulder have known for years the role we’ve played in the state’s aerospace industry,” said Robert H. Davis, Dean. “It is gratifying to see national publications such as U.S. News & World Report recognize that our College of Engineering and Applied Science is doing more than providing an education for students. We are helping drive the state’s economy and the nation’s aerospace industry.”

The state of Colorado is a leading center in the aerospace field, and CU Boulder plays a critical role. Colorado has the nation’s third largest aerospace economy and more private aerospace jobs per capita than any state in the country. About 40 percent of CU Boulder aerospace graduates remain in the state, taking jobs with local aerospace companies.

Students in Micro Gravity“We have an outstanding program that is pushing the frontiers of aerospace research,” said Penina Axelrad, chair of the aerospace engineering sciences department. “I’m proud of this honor and what it says about the work being done at CU Boulder.”

In total, four of CU Boulder’s engineering programs earned top 20 rankings:

  • Aerospace: No. 5 among public institutions, No. 8 overall
  • Chemical: No. 9 among public institutions, No. 15 overall
  • Civil: No. 16 among public institutions, No. 24 overall
  • Environmental: No. 14 among public institutions, No. 21 overall

The U.S. News & World Report graduate program rankings are based on academic peer assessment, corporate and corporate recruiter reviews, student selectivity, faculty resources, and research activity. Engineering programs at 194 colleges and universities were reviewed for the rankings.
