Information for Parents About the Honor Code

The presence of an honor code is vital to the Building Community Campaign, which is striving to develop a welcoming and supportive climate in which all people are respected and free to express differing ideals and opinions. A sense of mutual trust is critical to achieving such a community

The honor code works by receiving the support and participation of all members in the university community. Each member of the university community pledges to personally uphold the values of the honor code, though hearings are held for alleged student violations determine responsibility and is found responsible, to non-academic sanctions.

Effective implementation of the honor code hinges on the entire campus community's knowledge and support of the honor code system. Issues involving honor, integrity, and a community of trust are complex, therefore, training, workshops, and discussions are ongoing to increase the overall campus awareness about these issues.

Academic integrity is a commitment, even in the face of adversity, to five fundamental values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility. From these values flow principles of behavior that enable academic communities to translate ideals into action (The Center for Academic Integrity).
