MEMORANDUM
TO: All Faculty and Administrators
FROM: Michel R. Dahlin, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs
DATE: September 15, 1997
SUBJECT: Draft Policies on Post-Tenure Review and the Professional Plan
Attached are the latest drafts of policies on post-tenure review and
the professional plan, developed to implement the recommendations of the
Ad Hoc Committee on Tenure and Post-tenure Review. (The professional plan
has been written up as a separate policy for the sake of clarity.) At the
August meeting of the Board of Regents, Regent Norwood Robb introduced a
draft set of revisions to the Laws of the Regents regarding post-tenure
review. If adopted, these revisions would control certain aspects of the
University's post-tenure review policy. A copy of these revisions is also
included on this web site. Also included is Regent Robb's resolution calling
for the creation of faculty development funds.
Regent Robb's draft revisions develop a post-tenure review process that
is somewhat different from the one proposed by the Ad Hoc Committee. The
primary difference is that Regent Robb's process calls for an improvement
plan after a single "below expectations" evaluation in the annual
merit review, while the Ad Hoc Committee process does not require a formal
development plan until after two "below expectations" ratings.
Please review these three draft documents, keeping in mind the legislative
imperatives behind them. Convey your comments and suggestions to your Faculty
Assembly Chair or to the system-wide Educational Policy and University Standards
(EPUS) representatives from your campus. They will forward comments and
suggestions to the Ad Hoc Committee and to Faculty Council. The deadline
for your reply is October 6, 1997. |
