Students
who graduate from the College of Arts and Sciences receive a bachelor
of arts (BA) or bachelor of fine arts (BFA). A liberal arts
degree will prepare you for a variety of different professions, but is
generally not considered job training for one specific field.
Your priority, during orientation and through your first semester on campus, is to become acquainted with campus and the specific academic requirements of the college and your chosen major. There are a number of places to find the specific degree and major requirements, as well as tools available to help you track your academic progress.
Valuable
Tools
The
University of Colorado at Boulder catalog is available online
and provides students with detailed information about all academic
requirements. Another invaluable tool available to students
is the degree audit system, which enables students to track
their academic progress and remaining requirements. The
degree audit is available to students through the MyCUinfo
portal. Finally, and most importantly, is the student’s
assigned academic advisor.
Academic advisors are well versed in university requirements and the primary contact for students. Your advisor is here to help you, but it is up to you to initiate that contact and seek assistance when necessary. It is a good idea to visit with your advisor at least once each semester or whenever problems or questions arise. In the fall you can make an appointment with your advisor on the Academic Advising Center website, but plan ahead because it usually takes one or two weeks to get an appointment. Many advisors also offer walk-in hours. Your advisor will help you understand your choices, but the final choice is yours.
